5 Sleeping Mistakes That Hinder Your Weight Loss Efforts

What is the secret to losing weight quickly? What’s the relationship between sleeping well and losing weight? Going to bed on time but waking up under-rested and irritable?

Our body is a machine, but even machines need optimum rest; otherwise, they stop working and need repairs. Muscles are capable of intense work all through the day, but if one cannot sleep well, the body is tired, and one can even fall sick! Also, there is a close and astounding relation between sleeping well and losing weight!

We are living in such a fast life these days, even resting quietly is a privilege. All work and no rest cannot only tire you out too much, but it can also inhibit the good effects of the exercise you are doing. If you are not able to lose weight quickly and effectively, the reason is also embedded in your sleep habits.

Are you watching a lot of screens?
Recent studies blame the blue light emissions from computers, laptops, smartphones and the like to be responsible for lack of sleep. This causes staying up later and toppling the sensitive Dopamine balance in the body causing fatigue and hunger too. Any type of blue light causes the release of Cortisol in the body, and this hormone has been linked to weight gain. Avoid screens or any light source which can be responsible for inhibiting proper sleep. All these factors contribute to body’s inability to lose excess weight; in fact, one gains weight due to late night sleeping habit.

– Are you eating your dinner too late?
Eating right before bed can be a disaster. Not only responsible for digestive troubles like acid reflux, poor digestion, acidity and heartburn, but eating late also causes sluggish movement of food through the gut causing over-absorption of fats and carbs, and also, bloating. All these are the causes of weight gain in the body.

– Are you drinking fluids later?
Drinking fluids during the day is excellent for cleansing the system, but fluid intake must be cut down at least a couple of hours before bedtime simply because otherwise one needs to urinate in between sleep and such a disturbance can be a challenge in your weight loss journey. Research shows disturbed sleep due to urination in the middle of the night can cause obesity.

– Are you exercising right before bedtime?
Many people claim that the long walk they take right before sleeping calms them down and helps relax them. This can be counter-productive because exercise releases Dopamine and Cortisol (activity dependent release), and they will keep you up for longer instead of sending the signal to the brain that it is time to wind down. Stop any intense exercise 3 hours before bedtime to avoid this happening and allowing your mind and body peaceful sleep.

– Are you wearing the wrong clothes?
Too tight or uncomfortable clothing while you sleep can be a big factor interfering with sound sleep. This can be responsible for raised body temperatures, disrupted hormones and even nightmares! All these have been directly or indirectly linked to poor weight management, and hence, are responsible for obesity.
One can avoid these mistakes to better their sleep, and hence, improve health and solve weight issues.

Viral Fever in Monsoons: Symptoms, Precautions and Remedies

Viral fever in monsoon can destroy your daily routine and make you immensely ill. Well, every season brings with it a bunch of blues along with a bagful of bouquets. While there are many things to rejoice about, there are some things to be careful about. Similar is the case with the monsoon season. The arrival of rains gives respite from the scorching heat of summer; weather becomes cool, romantic, and colourful umbrellas, and raincoats come out of your closet.

While monsoon season cools down mother earth and fills up dams and rivers, it also opens Pandora’s Box of health ailments and infections. The dampness and humidity in this reason is the right medium for germs to multiply and cause a host of diseases and health problems. Viral fever is the most common illness seen during the monsoon season.

What is a viral fever?

You are said to have a fever when your body temperature rises above normal reading of 98.6 degrees F or 37 degrees C. The rise in temperature is a way of indicating that body’s immunity is compromised, and it is trying to fight off some infections caused by bacteria or virus.
You get a viral fever when the fever is caused by an infection from a virus. There are many types of virus which can attack the body, causing a host of different illness. The implications may range from low-grade fever to more serious diseases like dengue, chicken guinea, etc.

Symptoms of viral fever

Symptoms range from mild to severe depending upon the category of virus causing the infection. However, general symptoms include:

1)  Low-grade or high-grade fever
2)  Chills
3)  Nausea
4)  Aches in body parts like the legs, hands, joints, etc.
5)  Vomiting
6)  Headache
7)  Dizziness
8)  Sweating
9)  Inflamed tonsils
10) Running nose
11) Congestion in throat
12) Sore throat
13) Coughing
14) Sneezing
15) Rashes on skin
16) Diarrhoea
17) Loss of appetite
18) Weakness
19) Dehydration
20) Burning in eyes

Not all the above symptoms occur together. A person may exhibit only a few of these symptoms when infected.

How does it spread?
Viral fever is rampant during monsoon season because it offers the perfect weather to breed and multiply germs. When an infected person coughs or sneezes, they expel droplets carrying the virus into the atmosphere around them. When a normal person breathes this air, he gets infected with the virus. This is how viral infection is spread from one person to another.

When a person is down with viral fever, the symptoms take a toll on his health. The tremendous weakness and unbearable body pain affect the routine. There is also the risk of spreading the illness to other family members. So, it is always better to take precautionary measures and keep yourself safe from viral fever.

Precautionary measures

If you have already contracted the infection, avoid spreading it to other people. Cover your mouth and nose with a clean handkerchief while coughing or sneezing.

To reduce the chances of getting sick this monsoon, follow these tips:
Always wash your hands with disinfectant after coming in contact with an infected person.
Wash hands thoroughly before eating.

1)  If there is a sick person at home, clean floors, door handles, towels, and bed linen using disinfectant soap.
2)  Avoid going to crowded places. If it is necessary to go, cover your mouth and nose with a handkerchief.
3) Avoid having food in open areas.
4) Drink enough water and keep yourself hydrated.
5) Avoid getting drenched in the rain.
6) Use sanitizers to clean hands while travelling.
7) Exercise daily. It makes your body fit and helps combat infections.
8) Take enough rest and sleep for 7-8 hours. Sleep deprived body is immunity compromised.
9) Keep the surroundings clean.

Home Remedies to Combat Viral Fever
There are certain home remedies you can follow to pep up your immunity and keep infections at bay:

Turmeric: Turmeric milk or more popularly called as “golden milk” is touted as the saviour of infections in general because it is a great immunity booster, anti-inflammatory and has anti-microbial properties.
Basil (Tulsi): Basil has antiviral properties, which can prevent as well as help in curing viral fever. You can chew on basil leaves directly or brew a tea out of it.

Coriander seeds: Known to be rich in essential vitamins and phytonutrients, coriander seeds are excellent to ward off infections as well as treat them. You can make a tea of these seeds or simply mix with water and drink.

Fenugreek seeds: Soak fenugreek seeds in water and let it remain overnight. Drinking this at regular intervals will give you relief from viral symptoms.

Ultimately, the key to good health is good food, exercise, and enough rest. If you notice the above symptoms persisting, please visit a doctor and get treatment to avoid complications.

Top 5 Simple Home Remedies To Combat Skin Problems

Sticking to a healthy oil-free diet, clocking proper sleep hours, twists and turns every morning on the yoga mat – your umpteenth attempts towards achieving a flawless glowing skin might have disappointed you in terms of results. It’s not your efforts but the ever-increasing pollution levels that stay gaping between you and your healthy skin.

Smog and various other dust particles steal the charm and glow from your skin rendering it dull. Apart from the air pollutants, several other agents of pollution lead to slow skin damage, of which the added chlorine in swimming pools is a significant one. Knowing that an anti-pollution shield is not the feasible option, here’s listing down a few tips of the external layer of protection of home remedies to cleanse your skin from within that will help you go closer to the flawless, healthy skin.

Honey and Lime Juice

The most outrageous of all skin issues is the sun-tan. No matter how particular you are with the sunscreen lotions and other anti-tan skin products, a long day out in the sun and pollution does result in a sun-tan coating on your skin. Well, well, here’s one of the most effective home remedies to fight away sun-tan- lime juice and honey. In 2:1 ratio, raw lime juice and honey blended to a not-so-flowy consistency can do wonders to a suntanned skin. It rather deep cleanses the skin from within and works very fast.

Mix 2 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice with 1 tablespoon of honey. Wash your face with a cleanser. Apply the mixture over the face and neck. Avoid the eyes. Leave it for about 20-30 minutes and then wash with cold water.

Papaya Pulp

A number of skin products come with the tag of ‘papaya extracts.’ Yes, it’s true; papaya does lighten your skin tone. Instead of going for the chemical beauty products, try out the fruit pulp itself, all in the raw form. The blemishes, dark circles or any pigmentation are absolutely discarded on the application of papaya pulp to your skin.

Rub the pulp on the affected areas like face, neck for about 15 to 30 minutes and then wash off with normal water.

Neem (Indian lilac) and turmeric

While buying skin products, you must have come across this quintessential tag of ‘neem and turmeric extracts.’ Applying a thick semi-solid consistency of neem leaves and raw turmeric on the face and other sun-tanned parts of the skin cleanses and purifies the skin from within. It keeps pimples and rashes away owing to the antiseptic properties of both the ingredients. A little yellow tinge on your skin is likely to be there for a day, but your skin will be softer and clearer than ever for the next couple of days.

Take some fresh neem leaves and make it a fine paste with water. Add a few pinches of turmeric powder. Mix well. Wash the face before applying. Apply the paste and leave it for about 10-15 minutes and then wash with cold water.

A Diet Rich in Omega 3

More than external remedies, a proper diet is what your skin craves for. No matter how much choosy you may be with food, do keep in mind that food rich in Omega 3 is the key to prevention of harmful sun radiations. The fatty acids omega 3 and omega 6 aid your skin with an internal shield against the sun radiations. Spinach, oyster, walnuts, meat, eggs, kidney beans, and salmon are some rich sources of these essential fatty acids.

Hydration of Your Skin

Sufficient water supply is another inevitable necessity of your skin. Drinking about 5-6 glasses of water in the morning helps a lot to keep your skin properly hydrated.

Apart from the remedies mentioned above, consumption of shredded or ground turmeric along with jaggery, ginger, and green tea also helps in purifying your skin from within. Along with your sunscreen lotions, these home remedies will cater to your skin problems as well.

  6. Your exotic blue tea is ready.

Alternatively, when you add a dash of lime to it, you can see some magic! The blue colour slowly changes to purple! It is a visual treat. And you have some iced lemon blue tea ready!

Debunking Myth: Drinking Milk After Eating Fish Causes Leukoderma

How many of us have been warned against drinking a cup of milk soon after having fish in the meal? Well, it is advice being passed on through generations. And this belief that having milk with or shortly after eating fish causes skin disease like leukoderma is popular not only in India but in other countries too.

So, what is the authenticity of this belief? Is there any truth or scientific evidence attached to it or is it a mere superstition handed down to us?

The notion that having milk and fish together causes white patches on the skin is supported by ancient medicines like Indian Ayurveda and Arabian medicine. While these traditional medicines are a treasure house of knowledge and play a major role in healing several diseases, this particular claim is not entirely true.

Dr. Manoj Jain, Dermatologist, Navi Mumbai states that there is absolutely no scientific data which supports this claim. There has been no study or research which proves that having milk and fish together can cause white patches on the skin.

Let us see what leukoderma is and what the causes of this disease are.

What is leukoderma?

Leukoderma, also called vitiligo, is a skin disease which causes white patches to appear on the skin. It can affect any part of the body. It may focus on one part or may spread to other parts. The white patches are a result of the partial or complete destruction of skin pigment melanin, which gives the skin its colour.

What causes leukoderma?

Leukoderma is an autoimmune disorder, which means the faulty immune system of the body attacks its own cells and destroys them. Generally, leukoderma runs in families.

There is no correlation between diet and leukoderma in medical literature. So, there is no scientific proof to establish a relation between leukoderma and having milk and fish together.

Then why does our ancient medicine propagate this?

Ayurveda believes that certain types of food are not compatible and hence prohibits consuming such incompatible foods together. Well, there might be some logic which might have led to such beliefs. Let’s check them out!

  1. Some people are lactose intolerant. Drinking milk causes severe allergies in such people. Similarly, fish and other seafood are known to cause allergies in some people. Hence Ayurveda advocates against having milk and fish together.
  2. Milk and fish are both high protein foods. When these two protein-rich foods are consumed together, the body takes a lot of time to break the protein into simpler molecules. This is taxing on the digestive system.
  3. When you consume fish preparations which are high in spices and then subsequently have a glass of milk, there is acid reflux which causes indigestion and a bad stomach.
  4. Another reason Ayurveda claims is that fish is non-vegetarian food whereas milk is vegetarian, rendering the combination incompatible. Consuming the duo together may upset the natural balance of the digestive system.

Over the years, there have been different and multiple reasons for this belief and handed down across generations. But the fact remains that modern medicine does not support this theory. The reason being, for any theory to be proved, there has to be data and evidence. And, in this case, there is no evidence at all.

Not to forget that many cuisines all over the world, including the Mediterranean diet and Bengali fish curries, use curd in their preparations. There have been no reports of people contracting this disease after enjoying this cuisine.

Looking for Easy-Peasy Ways to Beat the Heat? Here Are Some to Dope On

The season of heat, sweat, and discomfort is finally here. Yes, the summer season is at its peak. And the gruelling heat has started to take a toll on people’s body. Although you can’t bring about a halt in your life by quitting going to college, school, or office or undertaking any important outdoor activity, you can certainly take measures to beat the heat. Yes, you can do many things to feel comfortable on a scorching summer day, but the following tips are the handiest. Check them out for a pleasant summer-

Keep your body hydrated with water. This is probably the most important thing you must do. During summer, your body loses fluids faster than in winter. These lost fluids need to be replenished with healthy beverages. Can there be a healthier beverage than water?

    water

Slip into loose fitting clothes. Those baggy t-shirts, wide legged pants, airy shift dresses, and kaftans are going to be your best friends through the summer season. Load your wardrobe with such pieces. And while doing the shopping, make sure you pick light colours only.

Treat your body to a cold shower every now and then. This will make you feel extremely comfortable after a hot day outside. Just make sure you don’t expose your body to chilling cold water right after you are back home. Let the temperature of your body cool down and then enjoy your bath.

Keep the lights switched off when you don’t need them. Lights, especially filament bulbs, create a lot of heat inside a closed space. If there is unbearable heat around, then it would be valuable for you to keep all the bulbs switched off.

Binge on some papaya. The summer season can bring with it a lot of inflammatory diseases. If you want to stay away from inflammations, then it would be wise of you to take papaya regularly. Papaya is loaded with vitamins E and C, which protect your body from inflammations.

Have you applied your sunscreen? If not, stay indoors! Going outside with no sunscreen on, cannot just burn your skin, but can also make you prone to fatal diseases like skin cancer. So, apply sunscreen on the exposed parts of your body when you go outside.

Make it a routine to drink coconut water. Coconut water has a lot of essential electrolytes because of which it can make your body feel rejuvenated after a tiring hot day. The best thing is that, you can drink coconut water at any time of the day.

Avoid tea and coffee. Yes, you might need to take these beverages during work to feel active, but they are going to make you feel warmer. So, stay away from them. Or if possible, minimise the intake.

Avoid hot and spicy food. Just like hot beverages, hot food items also cause you to feel hotter on a summer day. So, staying away from greasy or spicy food items would be ideal. Instead, you can binge on cooling fruits such as cucumbers and watermelons.

Don’t push the limits when it comes to physical activities. Yes, we understand you like to keep yourself fit and healthy. But doing rigorous exercise on a hot day will only make you feel weaker instead of energised. So, cut down on the amount of exercise you do!

Protecting yourself from the gruelling heat of the summer season is not really a daunting task if you know what steps to take to minimise the suffering for your body. These tips above are not just handy but also extremely effective in making you feel at ease during the summer days. So, what makes you wait? Try them out and spend a pleasant summer!

3 Reasons to Switch from Soda to Italian Espresso (and How to Drink It Properly)

They say an apple a day keeps the doctor away. But did you know that a cup of Italian espresso a day keeps the calories at bay, but only if you drink it as the Italians do? The liquid gold of the beverage world, Italian coffee is loved globally for the myriad benefits it offers its drinkers.

There are a number of rules on how the Italians drink their coffee, and adopting the Italian coffee culture will increase the benefits you get from this popular drink. The infographic below created by Med Cruise Guide on the 10 rules of Italian coffee drinking can help you learn how Italians consume their coffee, and stay healthy.

In addition to the extra zing of energy it lends, an Italian espresso, or caffé in Italian, has three huge benefits over soda drinks. Take a look:

1)  It dramatically reduces the number of calories you take

Aerated drinks and sweetened sodas contain as high as 150 calories in a can, making them extremely fattening and dangerous to health. A standard cup of Italian espresso, on the other hand, has as little as 4 calories, making it significantly safer for your body.

Even if you drink the espresso 5-7 times a day like the Italians do (rule #4 below), it is still much lower number of calories. Combine it with the walk to a café for each of these espressos, and you’ll have a nice walk each time – and burn calories along the way. 🙂

2) It minimizes the amount of sugar you take

Studies conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health shows how sugary sodas increase the likelihood of getting Type 2 Diabetes by 26%. Since sodas and fizzy drinks come pre-sugared, you really don’t have a choice on the amount of sugar to consume.

With an Italian espresso, on the other hand, you always have the option of staying away from the sugar altogether or controlling the amount you add to your drink. Italians usually have it without sugar, thus your energy level will increase without sugar as well.

3) It doesn’t give you that dreaded ‘caffeine rush’

One of the frequent contentions with coffee is the ‘caffeine rush’ that some drinkers experience. While this is a reality for a few, the caffeine rush can be easily avoided by drinking decaf.

Caffe Hag is a popular decaffeinated sibling of the traditional Italian espresso and it’s perfect for people who either can’t handle or don’t want coffee with high caffeine content (that’s rule #10 for you). A 5-ounce cup of decaf contains 2-5 ml of caffeine, whereas a 5-ounce glass of soda contains anywhere between 27 and 100 ml of caffeine.

If these reasons seem good enough to toss that can of soda aside and grab a cup of Italian espresso, then it’s a good idea to explore the infographic below and learn how the Italians do it – you’ll feel lighter, healthier and more energized!
