Career Growth, Power & Money

Career growth tips to make your future shine

Career growth is a matter of concern even among those who are massively experienced.  Contemporary education system has been so moulded that deciding on the right career is almost halfway done in the high school premises. It is not your high school grade cards, but your choice of subjects that pave your career path. Not always you need to pursue a career loaded with academics. Career prospects in the fields of art, acting, fashion and hospitality management are bright enough for a respectable living. If you are gifted with the talent, you are done to flourish in these fields.

Not everyone gets the opportunity to chase their dream career. Due to responsibilities or peer pressure, mostly people end up in some other career path. Talking if which, we come to the most popular hideout of today’s youth – the IT industry. Considering the luring ways, the contemporary IT jobs are advertised, initially people get glued to the IT hubs seeking a better lifestyle. But without the right professional skills, you can never make way through the web of hierarchy in this industry. Here’s a short list of the key skills you need to remind yourself when you are in an IT company.

Start evaluating your strengths and weakness

The foremost thing for any job role is SWOT- strength, weakness, opportunities and threats- a common evaluation used at various phases of one’s career. While it is a much wider perspective at the early stage, once you are already pursuing a particular career, it gets more streamlined. You might be good at coding but lack a point when it comes to presentations or your eloquence steals the limelight at every team meetings. Working on the weaknesses along with scoring higher with your strength is the key to success.

Grip on the newer technologies

While performing for your team, do not miss out on performing for yourself. Upgrading your own software, that is, your skill set with the newer technologies is the ultimate key to a steep-rising career graph. Knowing a particular tool or technology in and out hikes up your chances of getting awards of ‘the best performer’ but a skill set relevant to the latest of technologies can ensure your versatility and grip in the industry. So, while you make the efforts for the project assigned to you take out some time for an improved skill set as well.

Team Work

Any successful project requires a good team work. Being a proactive member of your team is one way you can steal the limelight. Not everyone is a born pro at coding or scripting. Make your presence in the team count with your coordination skills. After all a proper and effective teamwork is the key to the company’s success. Try and maintain a good communication with all the team members so that you can keep learning from each. Arrange for short discussion sessions, where individual doubts and mistakes can be anonymously solved.

Manoeuvre the heated-up discussions with your manager

The last but definitely not the least thing on your checklist should be a prudent way of dealing managers. Yes, there will a long list of grievances as everyone is not blessed with the perfect manager, but manoeuvring the debates with a diplomatic mail. Bargaining for leaves, salary hikes or promotions is another common thing in such cases, yet clearly stating your constraints has no other alternative. Also, be the wise one while convincing your manager for an onsite opportunity, may be as wise as a minister and never ever give in to the heated-up discussions, as it would not fetch any credits.

So, while you go after the luring IT job roles, do make a checklist of the corporate dealings. The cut-throat competition casts a threat in your way climbing up the corporate ladder- utilizing every opportunity aptly is the only way up through the ladder.

Work Environment

Wrap The Workload With Mutual Approaches

‘Quitting the boss and not the job’- one of the most common phrases you will come across in any industry. Surveys say that the number of start-ups has been increasing over the past few years and the most justifiable reason behind this seems to be the gifted brains that quit playing corporate puppets. Though the big-bang companies are replenishing their units with new resources (freshers from esteemed universities) yet the attrition rates are getting affected every year. In order to retain the experiences employees along with hiring the freshers the most significant role is played by the managers. Yes, only good managerial skills and strategies can help your company play the ace of all.

It is your approach that affects the most

Be it a start-up or be it a multinational corporation you need to utilize the hired brains in the best possible way. Increasing workload and lack of incentives is perhaps the most common scene every here and there. Employees working harder end up with the grudge of low performance ratings. One of the managerial recommendations coming right from the surveys made in and around the IT hubs tells you to interact in a smarter and calmer with your employees.

The strategy is to note down the demands and style of working of the employees. Having noted down their demands, check for a couple of demands, which can affect your work plans the least even in the worst-case scenario. In case as a manager, you are unable to grant the leave plans of your employees, try to negotiate instead of turning them down completely. Once you are through with a couple of their demands and your employees are content and happy, you can rest assured that imposing greater workload post leave plans will not be resisted.

Keep a mandatory back-up plan

Being a manager, it is mandatory to understand the issues faced by your resources. If not all the time, then at least for most of the time, try to circulate the workload. Though an equal division of work is the rarest rather next to impossible situation yet the current scenario of industry does not let you go without these considerations.

Assigning a couple of back-up resources always make it work when it comes to granting of leave plans. The only thing that is missed out by most managers is circulating back-up plans. The resources playing back-up should not be the same every time, and keeping it transparent about the dependency of their leave plans is another of the mandates.

Though it is not always possible to maintain this transparency yet try and keep switching among a few resources when it comes to play a back-up for another resource. This will certainly make way for flexible leave plans for each employee; moreover, it makes way for unaffected work plans.

Team up the diverse talents

While selecting resources for your team, mostly you keep an eye on the best developers or testers. Another thing that needs to be checked while teaming up resources is that at times the ones with better presentation skills prove to be highly beneficial for your team. It is not the manager who is in the charge of presentations all the time- like other responsibilities this needs to be shared as well. While the best coders are essential for a productive team, their being interactive is also required for a higher productivity and a healthy work environment.

Being a manger one of the huge responsibilities is to retain your employees. At times manipulation or at times negotiation can help in balancing the profit quotient with the job- satisfaction of your employees is the key to ace the managerial strategies. So go for the mutual approach and take the stand so as to not let people quit their bosses.

Leadership, Power & Money

What it takes to be A Useful Member of the Society?

Human nature is such that we all like getting more and more, but giving away less or nothing at all! We hoard a lot of things – money, fame, knowledge, benefits, and even food and water sometimes! The problem with this habit of hoarding is that it creates a division in the society that is very harmful for the deprived. It is a sad but true fact that in today’s world, it’s mostly the rich who get richer, and the poor only seem to be getting poorer.

We have all read about the “vicious lifecycle” that farmers in India lead. Some farmers are so unfortunate that even before they are born, they end up with a pile of debt that they are responsible for! How, you wonder? It is quite possible that their father or immediate ancestors had borrowed money from landlords, banks, or lenders and as a guarantee, they vowed that should they fail to repay the lenders themselves, they would ensure their offspring would take care of it. One way or another, the lenders were assured their money back. Thanks to the unpredictability of weather and the poor-quality seeds that our farmers are given, many farmers fail to harvest good crops and thus, they can’t repay the money they borrowed. This debt then passes on to their children, who in turn may face the same problem and the cycle of debt and repayment just goes on and on.

Another popular example of the rich getting richer can be seen in the high subsidies and tax benefits the rich people get. Recently elected President of the United States has been accused of cutting the funds for several welfare, abortion-related, and environmental programs only to channel them into unnecessary projects such as the building of a wall between USA and Mexico, and to help large corporations cover their debt or in the form of subsidies!

The Ideal Situation

The head of any country is elected to serve the nation. But it’s not just people holding important positions who should serve the country or the society. Each one of us has a responsibility towards the other members of our society as fellow human beings. The ideal situation that could prevail in the world is that all of us realise this fact on our own, and we implement acts which can convert this ideal situation from a mere concept into reality.

We have various sciences, forms of art, and math drilled into us in school, but equal or no importance is given to the teachings necessary to teach a child to grow into a good adult. An ideal situation of all peacefully co-existing in the world would only be possible if emphasis is also placed on teaching children to be better people, right from the beginning.

In order to initiate this concept in the society, there is one important things that all of us must possess, and which is the core topic of this blog – the willingness to serve.

Willingness to Serve

The willingness to serve people at the time of need is not something every man possesses. Sadly, due to the dying breed of genuinely good people, most of us are only looking for opportunities to be nice to people from whom they have something to benefit from. How else would you explain the closely knitted groups that serve only a fraction of the people and turn completely blind eye to the plight of others? So what exactly does serving people entail?

  1. Being willing to serve is not seen as a strength by men who are not good social members; it is looked upon as a sign of weakness. People who do simple acts of service, such as cleaning the house or washing the clothes and vessels are called by foul names by men who prefer forcing or even torturing the women and the young in their house to become slaves and complete such chores. They are not real gentlemen, are they? Some men would argue if they were even men or were they just lazy people who didn’t deserve to be called “men”.

  2. The onus to take care of your family does not lie with the ladies at home. It lies on every single member of the family. It works just like the wheels of a car. If one wheel got it into its head that it was a cut above the others and that it had nothing to do with the running of the car, it could stop working and potentially lead to a destructive accident of the vehicle. And when that happens, it’s not just the lowly three serving wheels that would get damaged, but the high n’ mighty wheel could get damaged too!

  3. People who understand the concept of serving as a show of strength and not weakness are in fact helping himself to a very large extent. Wondering how? Let’s understand this with an everyday example!

Example – Let’s imagine an ideal gentleman who helps his wife and children with different chores in the house when he has some spare time and energy to get involved. He believes in taking care of the stray animals near his home, and he tries to help his old neighbour as much as he can, without being condescending about it. He gives away old and small clothes to the homeless near his house, and he makes it a point to donate what little he can for the people who are less privileged than him.

One day, it so happens that his wife was working in the kitchen on the ground floor, and one of the bedrooms in the first floor caught fire. As his wife was unaware, she couldn’t alert the child who was playing close to the room on fire. Luckily, the old neighbour had taken it upon her to keep an eye out on the lovely, helpful family living next door to her, and she spotted the fire. So, she immediately calls the wife and let her know what she sees. The wife runs in time to get her child out of the house, but she knows she won’t be able to contain the fire on her own, nor does she think the fire engine would be there soon enough to save her home. That’s when the homeless people, alerted by the smoke rising from the house, appear on her yard, and they help her with dousing the fire.

  1. Had the man not been a gentleman, there wouldn’t be any peace at home. His wife would feel like she is an unpaid house help who has nothing else but household chores to take care of. She resents doing simple things such as cooking and washing because the activities have been termed “lowly” by her high and mighty husband, then would should she be forced to do them? The old neighbour wouldn’t have taken an initiative to save the family, nor would have the homeless people bothered with the smoke spiralling from the house.

  2. There is more that meet the eye when it comes to the matter of serving selflessly. Don’t always expect someone else to take the fall for you or put themselves in danger if you are not willing to do your bit too!

  3. Ever noticed how respected and loved the people are, who work in the armed forces? It’s because they chose to serve people, putting on the backburners their own lives and safety. There are immeasurable glory and joy in being a part of something noble, so never hesitate to serve someone every day, in the best possible way you can and to the best of your abilities.

So, take a step forward; inculcate the habit of helping others with small things in your daily life, and enjoy the feeling of happiness and satisfaction that you get after doing such activities. Just build in you the willingness to help other people, and the rest will naturally follow!

Leadership, Power & Money

Be a Champion of Honesty so you can be a Leader in your Profession!

Being honest is important if you want to build a meaningful relationship with anyone, be it at home or work. When you decide to be an important person to someone, get into a relationship and wholly commit to someone, you must prepare to have your promises scrutinized, your actions monitored by him or her and the entire world! Lots of curious cats surround us, you see!

A Shining Beacon of Honesty

People who set high expectations from you would expect you to be honest with your intentions and words. And what better way to talk about this virtue than talking about a man whose nickname itself contained the word “honest” – Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, a.k.a Honest Abe.

Apart from his passion to ensure people of all backgrounds and colour be treated equally, there was another reason people loved him so much. It was because he chose to be as honest as he could every time; to everyone he met in his life. There are plenty of examples that can be given here. There was a time when he had erroneously over-charged one of the clients in the shop he used to work in. Although he didn’t have to, he shut the shop, trailed the customer who had just left his shop, tracked him, and returned the excess money to him.

In another incident, a lady had been to the shop to buy some goods. She paid him the required money and then headed back home. Abe had realised that there was an added weight to the scales that he had forgotten to take off when he was measuring out the item for the lady who had shopped at his store. In this case, he didn’t return the difference amount but simply gave the appropriate quantity of item to the lady and called it even. It’s surprising, isn’t it, that hundreds of years back although people didn’t own much possessions, they had a more honest and giving heart than what we have now-a-days!

Even though he has been dead for so many years, Abraham Lincoln is still considered to be a pillar of truth and is quoted as one of the finest examples in terms of politicians stating the truth! Wouldn’t you like to be remembered as the virtuous gentleman who personified honesty?!

Today’s World of Dishonesty

What we have today instead is hundreds of scams hitting countries all over the world, very hard. It’s not the elite rich who are impacted by it. It is instead the common, middle class and the poor who are the worst affected by the cunning scams pulled off by conmen in various industries. Talk about any industrial sector or profession, and you’ll see that it has been plagued by one or the other scam at some point in time. In India itself, there have been numerous scams pulled off by people dabbling in the share market, by innumerable politicians, by people involved in the money lending and investment business, in the world of doctors and pharmaceuticals, and even those pulled off by common people such as auto and cab drivers!

For those who aren’t aware of it, drivers who charge their fare based on meters fixed in their vehicles have a technique by which they can make the meter jump ahead in terms of the distance covered, thereby making him eligible to charge a higher fare than what is actually owed. So, for example, if you’ve only travelled 5km, the rigged meter would show that you’ve actually travelled 8km. And there’s an extra Rs.30 that you owe to the driver. Another way in which the meter can be rigged is that instead of charging the approved rate per km., it will display a higher fare. Say you need to a minimum amount of Rs. 20 for a distance of up to 2 km, and for every km. You travel after that, you need pay Rs. 10. So ideally, for 5 km., you owe the driver only Rs. 50, but because of the tampered meter, you end up paying Rs. 70. There are so many other ingenious ways in which common people are duped every day, but they can’t all be listed here because we’d run short of space and the list would still not be complete!

How Honesty Weighs in on Your Profession

Being honest to each other in everyday life is fine, but we all are wary of being excessively honest in our professional lives, aren’t we? We all face cut-throat competition and most of us are trained to get to the top by hook or by crook, which sometimes involves using dishonest tactics. But there are actually three important reasons why one must strive to be as honest in your professional lives as possible. The reasons are:

  1. Earn Others’ Respect – Those who show honesty even when they are put under stress instantly win the respect and trust of people, no matter what designation they work in the office. And it’s not just people working in large conglomerates who benefit from being honest. Even those who work on a freelance or small scale can be benefitted, because everyone must after all interact with other people to earn money. There are certain people with whom you must remain on good terms in order to be successful. Plus, you too respect them for their power, for their work, for their abilities, and for the help that they provide you with your work. Honest dealing with such people is especially important because when they respect you back, you can continue to hold them in the high esteem that have been holding them at.
  2. It’s a flaw – No matter what justification you provide when questioned for your reasons to being dishonest, you cannot convince your questioner completely. What’s worse, it is a flaw that they will forever be associated with you and will remind people of your weakness every time a situation crops up that demands integrity of people. All reasoning you provide for being dishonest will always be considered as an excuse, and those that breach terms of contracts can also be punishable by law.
  3. Karma! – There’s a very popular saying – “What goes around comes back around”. And this is especially true when it comes to lying. When you lie to a person, and you are caught, the person would lose their trust and respect for you. But apart from that, they would have no qualms in being dishonest to you the next time a situation convenient for them arises. Even if you don’t get caught, your actions will have a way of leaving their impression on you, on your psyche, that will trouble your conscience until you do something to set it right. And as a firm believer in the power of goodness and a Higher Authority above all human beings, we believe that even if people don’t punish you for your wrongdoings, you will get your fate served to you in some other way in future! So why face the ire of karma when you can appease it with good deeds!

Use Honesty Judiciously

Chanakya was one of the best strategists the world has ever produced, and probably ever will. One of his teachings is that one must never be “too honest” when it comes to your profession. Despite all that has been discussed above, this teaching is actually very true, and must be followed. But bear in mind that being excessively honest about you, your personal life must be avoided. You must not reveal every intimate detail about your family, your past, your habits, your earnings, or your business dealings with other people, companies, and your managers to whomsoever may ask you.

There is something that should never be disclosed at your workplace so that you maintain a good professional impression at your workplace. However, you must be completely honest when it comes to handling other people’s trust, money, and dealing with one another in office. There were times when Chanakya asked Chandragupta Maurya to withhold some facts, but it was for the larger good of his country, not for his self-benefit.

So be careful how you conduct yourself, especially in your professional sphere because the world is no longer a happy place filled with content people. There will be backstabbing, competition that you need to face, and challenges that you need to overcome. Try to be as honest and straightforward in your dealings as possible without exposing yourself to risks from other people, and you can lead a peaceful professional life. Otherwise, you’d be busy worrying about getting exposed, or about how your lies would affect you, or how you need to continue lying or fudging documents to maintain your integrity! All these mind games may look good in TV serials, but they can actually be really mentally draining! So don’t waste your time hiding your lies, but instead be decisive and a good judge of handling your clients and facts.

Be a Better Manager, Power & Money

Acing the Art of Negotiation

Negotiation is a process through which people agree or disagree with a point. It is an art of conversation in which the negotiators try to settle the point, either in agreement or disagreement, to achieve the best possible outcome. A negotiation is an important tool which is used in daily business transactions, settling disputes, asking a salary raise, dealing with international affairs, government matters, and legal systems. Negotiation skills can be of a great benefit in resolving disputes and coming to a conclusion which is mutually agreed upon. The key to negotiation is to get what one wants without cheating or neglecting the other party’s wants, and that’s a big challenge!

One can easily become a good negotiator with practice. We have put down a few tips for you to get started.
1.  Be a good listener: It is very easy to assume what the other person is saying that we don’t give them a patient ear. Listening is important because it will help build trust with the other party and secondly, make them feel respected. It is essential to concentrate on what the other party is saying, so as to understand all aspects of the negotiation.
2.  Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement (BATNA): It is always advised to have an alternative plan which you can pull into your negotiation conversation when you feel it is going out of hand. A strong alternative will lead to two possible outcomes – settle with the agreement with terms favourable to you or decline the negotiation deal. Having a strong alternative will boost your confidence to reach a mutually beneficial agreement or opt for a better alternative.
3.  Look for common links: Another key point in negotiation is to look for common interests which you share with the other person. You can have an informal chat and figure out what interests both the parties. It could be a common interest in sports, films, or history. When you share common interests with the other person, it would be difficult for them to confront you.
4.  Ask questions: It is very important to delve into the minds of the other party and try to gauge their thought process. For doing that, you must ask them questions. For example, if you are negotiating salary, never give them a salary range such as Rs.7,00,000 per annum to Rs.10,00,000 per annum. The potential employer will tend to close the negotiation at the lowest range i.e. Rs.7,00,000 per annum. Instead, ask questions and do not provide any range if you do not have much information.
5.  Look out for trade – offs: Successful negotiators seek to win – win solutions in every deal. After – all, the objective of approaching a negotiation is to attain a win – win situation for both the parties. It also helps you in broadening your pie of share. For example, if your boss is not able to give you the salary raise you wanted, but speaks to you about your promotion or adding more role responsibility. Thus, he is able to offer you more than the original deal, thus reaching a mutually beneficial outcome.
Negotiation is an art which can be aced through practice. One needs to be open and honest while approaching the other party with a keen intent in how to maximize benefits for both of you.
