Finally, the most talked about sensational couple has taken the plunge and made it official! Just when we thought celebrity marriages were passé, they proved us wrong. We assumed that the steamy romance between Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas would fizzle out, but the official announcement of their engagement put all rumours to rest.
Bollywood quintessential heroine Priyanka Chopra (36) and singer Nick Jonas (25) had a Roka (engagement) ceremony in Mumbai on Saturday amidst close friends and family. Later it was followed by an engagement bash attended by many top people from the film industry as well as industrialists.
Considering the many anomalies in this relationship, be it the intercultural match, the huge age difference or the long-distance romance, there were huge speculations whether it was another celebrity flash romance.
So how did it all begin?
As unusual as their romance, the couple made their first public appearance together even before they were romantically involved. Or that is what Priyanka Chopra claimed in Jimmy Kimmel’s show. Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas walked in together on the MET Gala’s Red Carpet in May 2017. Both were wearing outfits designed by Ralph Lauren. The chemistry between them was sizzling and quite obvious.
The Relationship Took Momentum
After a year since their first appearance together, in May 2018, a US Weekly reported that Priyanka and Nick were dating and were seen and photographed by media on several of their dates. They weren’t hiding their relationship anymore. Later in June, when the much-in-love couple met each other’s families, it became quite obvious that the lovebirds were serious. The high-profile couple didn’t seem much bothered by the 11-year age gap between them.
The Proposal
Nick Jonas popped the question to Priyanka Chopra when they were celebrating her 36th birthday in London. Apparently, Nick had been planning to propose Priyanka on her birthday, for which he had selected an engagement ring from Tiffany’s. They were vacationing in London to bring in Priyanka’s birthday, and it was then that Nick proposed. Looks like Priyanka was more than happy to accept, though she stated that she hadn’t anticipated it this early. Nothing could have matched this lovely birthday present Nick gave her.
It was after this quiet unofficial exchange of rings that Priyanka chose to walk out of Salman Khan’s movie Bharat and sent the media houses into a frenzy of speculations.
The Getting Together of Families
Priyanka is reported to have accompanied Nick to his cousin’s wedding in order to know his family and friends better. Nick flew to India to meet Priyanka’s mother and other family members. All this moved the relationship steadily ahead, and an announcement was soon expected.
The Engagement: Roka ceremony
The Roka ceremony was an intimate event, scheduled on Saturday afternoon and attended by only immediate family and close friends. Dressed in a lemon yellow Anarkali designed by Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla, Priyanka looked radiant as sunshine. Nick, the videshi son-in-law, sported traditional Indian attire and looked as comfortable as any other desi boy. Nick’s parents, Kevin Sr and Denise Jonas arrived for the celebrations and wore Indian ethnic outfits.
The ceremony was attended by close friends and family including Priyanka’s cousin Parineeti Chopra, Arpita Khan Sharma (Salman Khan’s sister), producer Mushtaq Sheikh, Shrishti Arya Behl, (Goldie Behl’s sister) and others.
The engaged couple uninhibitedly posed for photos and made a handsome pair.
“Taken…With all my heart and soul..,” wrote PeeCee on her social media account.
The Engagement Bash
Roka ceremony was followed by an engagement party where many industry bigwigs and friends were invited. PeeCee looked resplendent and had a natural glow throughout the evening. Being in love really works like a magic tonic to the face I guess! Nick charmed his way into the hearts of Desi guests with his charisma.
The invitees included industrialist Mukesh and Nita Ambani, Parineeti Chopra, Vishal Bharadwaj, Alia Bhatt, Arpita Khan, Mushtaq Sheikh, Siddharth Roy Kapoor, Anusha Dandekar, Nick’s parents and Priyanka’s family.
